Meet Luke, a passionate apprentice enrolled in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology.
"My interest in cars probably really sparked once I got my learner's permit. I've always liked knowing how things work. I've always liked pulling things apart too much. When I was driving my car on my L's, I said, "this is really cool. I wanted to learn more about how cars worked and find out more." It developed into me applying for an apprenticeship at the MTA.”
In the future, Luke is eager to own his own workshop, but he is currently taking things as they come and learning as much as he can.
"One of the guys that I was working with last week said it's always, always different. You can do a million services. And on the million and first time you'll see something you've never seen before."
"I enjoy the thrill of progressing. The first car I worked on, I fixed up, and it felt amazing. Now, I'm planning to sell it and upgrade to something bigger and better."
"My focus has been on cosmetic improvements and learning maintenance tasks. I've handled fluid changes and even replaced a blown-out turbo. Interestingly, I'm now in the process of rebuilding it again due to wear and tear. All of this work has taken place in my own garage."
Luke recalled a moment when he was working on his car. "I thought, 'Wow, this is really sick.' That's when I decided to apply to the MTA because I wanted to pursue this passion."
Outside of work, Luke is excited about going on tours, driving around, and camping. Exploring beaches and driving on roads appeals to him. "I'm particularly interested in driving from Robe to Beachport along the beach. Camping in the Victorian high country is another goal of mine, even though it's quite far away. I've seen some incredible videos of the area."
